Update

Sorry for no posts in a while, we have moved to another house and all has been in disarray. I have had no time to stop and go walking around to sketch.

As soon as I get a chance I will add some more. There is a large kompung near our new house that will provide some great scenes and people to sketch.

I have some trips coming up soon and I'm sure I will have some nice things to sketch.

Please don't stop coming and looking at my sketches and I thank all of you who take the time to visit.

A few sketches from bali

We were in Bali for a conference for 7 days and then stayed for another three days after the conference for some R and R.

Below is just a part of the conference. There were about 300 people there. We were late getting to the start of it this day so we had to sit in the back. I took advantage of it and decided to sketch.
This is he beach right outside of the hotel where the conference was being held. The tide would go waaaaay out past the rocks (the darker scribbles toward the back) and it would leave the coral reef exposed. We were able to walk out on it and explore the life that was teaming in the tidal pools left behind. My son loved it. He was out there everyday.
This is a "board" walk to the left of the boat you see above. It's actually made of concrete. It had a round about at the end with a "stage" in the center where people would watch the sunrise/sunset, talk or do Yoga. I was sitting on the rail sketching. The right is the walkway and the left goes into the ocean.

Another trip to Jogjakarta

The following sketches are of the return trip to Jogjakarta to pick up the kids from camp.

This is what greets you when you enter the Jogjakarta airport. They are called Niozo players. The Niozo is an instrument that makes an incredibly soothing tone. The sounds seem to just roll across air.

This was a bit unusual fro me. This is just one side of a HUGE chandelier that was being sold in the air port. Why they would sell a chandelier in an airport, I have no idea. The details looked like a challenge so I took them on.

This was a young man sleeping at the train station in Jogjakarta. He was surrounded by friends, but he looked like the most interesting to sketch. After I sketched him, his friends wanted to see. They then proceeded to wake Rizal and show him. He simply raised his head and gave me a thumbs up, then laid back down. One of the girls that was with them took some pictures of me and my friend then asked if she could have my pen I drew him with. I politely gave it to her. I had another one at home.

This is the five hour train ride home. This is Cliff and one of his daughters sleeping on him.

Trains, Planes and Automobiles...

Here are some sketches of a trip to a neighboring city, Jogyakarta. We started out driving two hours to the train station, then riding the train five hours to Jogyakarta, then driving thirty minutes to a camp site dropping off our kids, then driving to the airport and flying back to Surabaya then driving another two ours back to Malang.

We left at 4 a.m. and did not return until 10 p.m. We were exhausted. We have to make this same trip again this coming Saturday to pick up the kids.

The view from the plane window. It was a bumpy flight so excuse the really crooked lines.
Sorry about the book mark I forgot to remove before scanning.

The train station in Jogyakarta. I had to sketch this in about 10 mins or less. Our taxi had arrived.

Doors to healing

Today, we had to take my wife to the Orthopedic Dr. to look at her toe she had broken while playing wall ball. This is also the same Dr. we took our oldest daughter to when she broke her arm while rollerblading.

I could not help but sketch these beautiful doors that lead to his exam room. This particular Hospital was built when the Dutch were here in Indonesia and it is fair to say that these doors are the originals. They stand an impressive ten feet or so and are solid wood.

Hand Study

This is my first attempt at drawing a hand with detail. Sort of like a study. This is my hand holding the sketch book.

Access Palm (pen)

This is a Palm behind our language school. It towers above everything else. You can't help but notice it.
